John has worked in the aviation industry for over forty years, managing the air traffic control operations at the largest airport in the United States and one of the busiest airports in the world, Denver International Airport. During his years of working in radar rooms and control towers, he observed people closely to gain a better understanding of why some people are more effective in their work than others, and why they are able to rise to the level of a true professional.
During his career he participated in many highly professional efforts with other dedicated people, such as the construction of the new Denver airport, and while controlling the millions of flights that use the airport. Unfortunately he has also witnessed professionalism lapses that have caused poor service to customers, inefficient operations, safety lapses, and even airplane crashes. Those experiences gave John some valuable insights into the need for professionalism in the world. The most important insight is that it is insufficient for people to just be good performers in their jobs. Professionals also need to be outstanding people interpersonally. This blend of great technical skills and outstanding human skills is what creates a true professional. Decades of working in the high-demand aviation industry have taught him about the necessity of working professionally every day in every career field, because no matter where we work, someone is counting on us to get things right.
While John’s experience is largely in the aviation industry, the lessons he shares apply to every profession. His ideas redefine the image of what a professional is. They will change how you work, and more importantly, why you work. While people do many different jobs all over the world, he has learned that the ingredients of professionalism are the same regardless of the kind of work we do or where we live. His heartfelt words can help anyone be more content and successful in their professional and personal lives.
